How many bones does the Axial Skeleton consists of? 80 bones; skull, vertebral column and thoracic cage
How many bones does the cranium(skull) have? 22 bones: 21 immobile and 1 mobile (mandible)
Brain case 8 bones, encloses the brain in the cranial cavity, attachment for head and neck muscles
What are the 8 bones of the brain case? Temporal (2), Parietal (2), Occipital, Frontal, Sphenoid, Ethmoid
Parietal Bones Paired bones (right and left) Boundaries: Fontal -> anterior, Occipital ->posterior, Temporal (inferior)
Temporal Bones Forms lower lateral side of skull
What are the subdivide regions of the temporal bones? Squamous portion, zygomatic process, Mastoid (for muscle attachment, Mastoid sinus), Petrous Ridge (floor of cranial cavity)
Landmarks of Temporal Bones External and internal acoustic meatus, mandibular fossa, styloid process, carotid canal
Frontal Bone Forms the forehead, Forms supraorbital margins --> thickened superior margins of orbits. Supra orbital foramen --> for supraorbital artery and nerve to pass to forehead Glabella --> smooth portion of frontal bone between orbits
Occipital Bone Posterior skull, posterior base of cranial cavity --> supports cerebellum.
Occipital Bone : What does the external occipital protuberance do? its the ligament attachment of the neck
Occipital Bone: What does the superior nuchal line do? most superior point where neck muscle attaches to skull
Occipital Bone: What does the Foramen magnum do? allows passage of spinal cord
Occipital Bone: What does occipital condyles do? forms joints with 1st cervical vertebra
