How many bones does the Axial Skeleton consists of? | 80 bones; skull, vertebral column and thoracic cage |
How many bones does the cranium(skull) have? | 22 bones: 21 immobile and 1 mobile (mandible) |
Brain case | 8 bones, encloses the brain in the cranial cavity, attachment for head and neck muscles |
What are the 8 bones of the brain case? | Temporal (2), Parietal (2), Occipital, Frontal, Sphenoid, Ethmoid |
Parietal Bones | Paired bones (right and left) Boundaries: Fontal -> anterior, Occipital ->posterior, Temporal (inferior) |
Temporal Bones | Forms lower lateral side of skull |
What are the subdivide regions of the temporal bones? | Squamous portion, zygomatic process, Mastoid (for muscle attachment, Mastoid sinus), Petrous Ridge (floor of cranial cavity) |
Landmarks of Temporal Bones | External and internal acoustic meatus, mandibular fossa, styloid process, carotid canal |
Frontal Bone | Forms the forehead, Forms supraorbital margins --> thickened superior margins of orbits. Supra orbital foramen --> for supraorbital artery and nerve to pass to forehead Glabella --> smooth portion of frontal bone between orbits |
Occipital Bone | Posterior skull, posterior base of cranial cavity --> supports cerebellum. |
Occipital Bone : What does the external occipital protuberance do? | its the ligament attachment of the neck |
Occipital Bone: What does the superior nuchal line do? | most superior point where neck muscle attaches to skull |
Occipital Bone: What does the Foramen magnum do? | allows passage of spinal cord |
Occipital Bone: What does occipital condyles do? | forms joints with 1st cervical vertebra |
