| EPIDERMIS | superficial, thinner layer of the skin |
| DERMIS | deep, thick layer of the skin |
| HYPODERMIS | found beneath the dermis, connects skin to fibrous tissue of bones and muscles |
| MELANIN | pigment that determines skin and hair color |
| 7 FUNCTIONS OF THE SKIN | protection, sensation, growth, vitamin D synthesis, excretion, temperature regulation, and immunity |
| SWEAT GLANDS | most numerous and widespread glands; eccrine glands help body maintain its temperature, apocrine glands begin to function at puberty, are found in armpits, breast, and anus |
| 5 LAYERS OF THE EPIDERMIS | stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, stratum corneum |
| KERATIN | tough, fibrous protein. makes up hair, skin and nails |
| DERMOEPIDERMAL JUNCTION | a unique polysaccharide gel that cements the epidermis to the dermis |
| PAPILLARY LAYER OF DERMIS | thin, superficial layer of the dermis. Here dermal papillae (bumps) are formed |
| RETICULAR LAYER OF DERMIS | deeper, thicker layer of the dermis. most hair follicle and skin gland structures are in this layer |
| EUMELANIN | very dark brown, almost black melanin pigment |
| PHEOMELANIN | a lighter reddish or orange melanin pigment |
| SEBACEOUS GLANDS | secrete oil for the hair and skin |
| CERUMINOUS GLANDS | special variety of apocrine sweat glands; form ear wax or cerumen |
