Ch 19: Functions
| Structure | Function |
|---|---|
| Atria | Collection chambers |
| Ventricles | Pumping chambers |
| Interatrial Septum | Separates atrium |
| Interventricular Septum | Separates ventricles |
| Valves | Keeps blood flowing in one direction |
| Tricuspid Valve ( Right AV Valve) | Blood goes through from R atrium to R ventricle |
| Bicuspid Valve (Left AV Valve/Mitral Valve) | Blood goes through from L atrium to L ventricle |
| Pulmonary Valve | One-way valve that keeps blood going through the pulmonary trunk and out of the heart to the lungs |
| Aortic Valve | One-way valve that that keeps blood going through the aorta and out of the heart to the rest of the body (except lungs) |
| Chordae Tendineae ( aka Heart Strings) | Hold the AV valves in place while the heart pumps blood |
| Papillary Muscles | Prevents backflow of blood into the atrial cavities |
| Trabeculae Carneae | Helps ventricles pump blood |
| Great Vessels | Carries blood to and from the heart |
| Inferior Vena Cava | Carries deoxygenated blood that has circulated through the lower half of the body back to the right atrium |
| Superior Vena Cava | Delivers oxygen into the bloodstream and removing carbon dioxide |
| Pulmonary Trunk | Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs |
| Pulmonary Arteries | Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs |
| Pulmonary Veins | Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium |
| Aorta | Main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body |
| Coronary Circulation | Delivers oxygenated blood to the coronary arteries |
| Coronary Sulcus | Separates atria and ventricles |
| Right Coronary Artery | Specifically provides blood to the right atrium |
| Left Coronary Artery | Supplies blood to both the left atrium and left ventricles |
| Circumflex Artery | Branches off from the left coronary artery and supplies most of the left atrium |
| Anterior Interventricular Artery (Widow maker) {aka left anterior descending artery} | Supplies the apex, anterolateral myocardium, and interventricular septum |
| Great cardiac vein | Returns deoxygenated blood (metabolic waste products) from the anterior surfaces and the left ventricle. |
