| Attorney general | Lead attorney for the state of VA. |
| Biennial | Occurring every two years. |
| Concurrent Powers | Powers shared by state and national governments. |
| Delegate | A member of the House of Delegates in the General Assembly. |
| Denied powers | Powers specifically disallowed by Constitution for state and national government. |
| Expressed powers | Powers specifically stated in the Constitution for the national government. |
| Federalism | Division of power between the national and state levels of government. |
| Foreign policy | National government strategy for dealing with other nations. |
| General Assembly | State lawmaking body. |
| Governor | State executive (4 years, single term). |
| Implied powers | Powers not stated but necessary to carry out expressed powers (DUH). |
| Lieutenant Governor | Constitutional officer elected to assist the Governor with enforcing state laws. |
| Mandate | An official order from the national government directing states to do something. |
| Pardon | Executive power to forgive or excuse from a sentence or offense. |
| Reserved Powers | Powers set aside for the states or the people by the 10th amendment. |
