State Government

Attorney general Lead attorney for the state of VA.
Biennial Occurring every two years.
Concurrent Powers Powers shared by state and national governments.
Delegate A member of the House of Delegates in the General Assembly.
Denied powers Powers specifically disallowed by Constitution for state and national government.
Expressed powers Powers specifically stated in the Constitution for the national government.
Federalism Division of power between the national and state levels of government.
Foreign policy National government strategy for dealing with other nations.
General Assembly State lawmaking body.
Governor State executive (4 years, single term).
Implied powers Powers not stated but necessary to carry out expressed powers (DUH).
Lieutenant Governor Constitutional officer elected to assist the Governor with enforcing state laws.
Mandate An official order from the national government directing states to do something.
Pardon Executive power to forgive or excuse from a sentence or offense.
Reserved Powers Powers set aside for the states or the people by the 10th amendment.
