Lymphatic System

Lymphatic System explained

QuestionAnswer
What do the lymphatic vessels do? Absorb excess interstitial fluid and transport this fluid to ducts that drain into veins.
What produces lymphocytes? Lymph nodes and lymphoid tissues in the thymus, spleen, and tonsils.
What are lymphocytes? White blood cells involved in immunity.
What do lymphocytes provide? Immunological defense against disease causing agents.
What are lymphatic capillaries composed of? Endothelial cells with porous junctions.
What do lymph ducts empty into? Either the Thoracic duct or right lymphatic duct.
What is returned back to the cardiovascular system? Interstitial fluid, formed by filtration of plasma out of blood capillaries that is filtered through lymph nodes.
What do phagocytic cells do? Help remove pathogens and germinal centers.
What are germinal centers? Sites of lymphocytic production.
What are Lymphoid organs? Tonsils, Thymus, spleen.
