Genetics Vocab

TermDefinition
allele one of two or more alternative forms of a gene
homozygous having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes
heterozygous having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.
genotype the two alleles inherited for a particular gene ex: RR, Rr, rr
phenotype the set of observable/physical characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment ex: brown hair, blue eyes
dominant the "big" allele that is expressed over a recessive trait if present
recessive the "small" allele, two are needed for the phenotype to be expressed
