Gasteroenterology Study of the digestive system
Digestion Physical and chemical breakdown of complex foodstuffs into simpler substances
Peristalsis Rhythmical waves of contraction which move food along the gastrointestinal tract
Mucus Thick, sticky fluid secreted by some membranes and glands
Chyme Nearly liquid mixture of partially digested food and digestive secretions found in the stomach and small intestine
Intrinsic factor Mucoprotein found in gastric juice, necessary for the assimilation of Vitamin B12
Villi Short, vascular, threadlike projections covering the mucous membrane of the small intestine
Sphincter Ring like muscle fiber which controls an outlet, permitting it to open and close
Diaphragm Muscular membrane that separates the abdominal cavity from the thoracic cavity
Fibrinogen Protein in the blood, which aids in clotting
Albumin One of the simple proteins
Toxin Any poisonous substances of microbic, vegetable, mineral, or animal origin
Cholesterol Organic fat-like compound found in animal fat, bile, blood, brain, tissue, liver, and other parts of the body
Antibody Protein substance in the blood developed by the body usually in reaction to a specific foreign substance
Feces Body waste including food residue, bacteria, epithelium, and mucus discharged from the intestines
Carbohydrates Starches and sugars
Hormones Chemical substance, secreted by an endocrine gland, which regulates the functions of the organs
Exocrine External secretion of a gland
Endocrine Internal secretion of a gland
