Genetics Games

QuestionAnswer
What are genes? Genes are pieces of genetic information that code for specific traits.
What are alleles? Alleles are different forms of genes.
What does the term "dominant" mean in genetics? The term "dominant" refers to an allele that will hide the weaker allele (ex. B, compared to b).
What does the term "recessive" mean in genetics? The term "recessive" refers to an allele that is masked or hidden by the presence of a dominant allele (ex. b, compared to B).
What are phenotypes? Phenotypes are organisms' physical appearances.
What are genotypes? Genotypes are the combinations of any two alleles (ex. BB, Bb, bb).
What is a Homozygous Recessive genotype? A Homozygous Recessive genotype is a genotype that contains two of the same recessive alleles (ex. bb).
What is a Homozygous Dominant genotype? A Homozygous Dominant genotype is a genotype that contians two of the same dominant alleles (ex. BB).
What is a Heterozygous genotype? A Heterozygous genotype is a genotype that contains both a dominant and a recessive allele (ex. Bb).
What are alleles represented by? Alleles are represented by single letters (ex. B, a, C, etc.).
What is an example of a phenotype? An example of a phenotype is the word "tall" (ex. 5 feet "tall").
What is an example of a genotype? An example of a genotype is eye color (ex. the term "eye color" is a trait).
