| Olfactory Nerve | I; sense of smell |
| Optic Nerve | II; sense of sight |
| Oculomotor Nerve | III; raising eyelid, directing eyeball, constricting iris, and controlling lens shape |
| Trochlear Nerve | IV; directs eyeball |
| Trigeminal Nerve | V; convey sensory impulses from various areas of face, supply motor fibers for mastication |
| Abducens Nerve | VI; primarily a motor, innervating lateral rectus muscle |
| Facial Nerve | VII; facial expression, parasympathetic impulses to lacrimal and salivary glands |
| Vestibulocochlear Nerve | VIII; adjustment of sensitivity of receptors |
| Glossopharyngeal Nerve | IX; innervate part of tongue and pharynx for swallowing, provide parasympathetic fibers to parotid salivary glands |
| Vagus Nerve | X; help regulate activities of heart, lungs, and abdominal viscera |
| Accessory Nerve | XI; control movement of certain neck muscles/ innervate trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles |
| hypoglossal Nerve | XII; innervate extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of tongue that contribute to swallowing and speech |
