Cranial Nerves

Anatomy and Physiology

Olfactory Nerve I; sense of smell
Optic Nerve II; sense of sight
Oculomotor Nerve III; raising eyelid, directing eyeball, constricting iris, and controlling lens shape
Trochlear Nerve IV; directs eyeball
Trigeminal Nerve V; convey sensory impulses from various areas of face, supply motor fibers for mastication
Abducens Nerve VI; primarily a motor, innervating lateral rectus muscle
Facial Nerve VII; facial expression, parasympathetic impulses to lacrimal and salivary glands
Vestibulocochlear Nerve VIII; adjustment of sensitivity of receptors
Glossopharyngeal Nerve IX; innervate part of tongue and pharynx for swallowing, provide parasympathetic fibers to parotid salivary glands
Vagus Nerve X; help regulate activities of heart, lungs, and abdominal viscera
Accessory Nerve XI; control movement of certain neck muscles/ innervate trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles
hypoglossal Nerve XII; innervate extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of tongue that contribute to swallowing and speech
