The Nervous System
| Term | Definition |

| nervous system | made of structures that control the actions and reactions of the body |
| brain | the body’s central; command organ; it constantly receives impulses from all over the body |
| spinal cord | allows your brain to communicate with the rest of your body |
| peripheral nervous system | two main parts: the sensory part and the motor part |
| central nervous system | includes the brain and the brain stem |
| nerve | collection of nerve cell extensions bundles together with blood vessels and connective tissue |
| neuron | a cell that moves messages in the form of a fast-moving electrical energy |
| dendrite | a short extension of a cell body |
| axon | an extension of the neuron; carries impulses |
| impulse | the signal that travels along the length of a nerve fiber and ends in the release of neurotransmitters |
| neurotransmitter | a chemical signal that has been changed from an electrical signal; released into the gap between the neuron and other cells |
| myelin | the protective sheath around the axon |
