Bill of Rights the first 10 amendments to the Constitution that protect the rights and freedoms of individuals as Americans (US citizens) by limiting the power of the federal government
1st amendment freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition
2nd amendment right to bear arms to maintain a well regulated militia.
3rd amendment no quartering soldiers (government cannot force citizens to shelter soldiers in their homes)
4th amendment right to privacy (protect from unreasonable searches and seizures)
5th amendment right toDUE PROCESS of law (to be innocent until proven guilty)
6th amendment right to a speedy and public trial (and to have a lawyer)
7th amendment right to trial by jury
8th amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment
9th amendment citizens have additional rights that are not listed in the Constitution (basic human rights)
10th amendment powers not given to the federal government by the Constitution belong to the people and the states
Why did the Founding Fathers create the Bill of Rights? They wanted to create a government that could not take away the rights of its citizens.
