The Spinal Cord and Spinal Nerves

Neuron Conducting cell of the nervous system
Dendrites Neuron fiber that conducts impulses toward the cell body
Axon Fiber of a neuron that conducts impulses away from the cell body
Synapse Junction between two neurons or between a neuron and an effector
Neurotransmitter Chemical released from the ending of an axon that enables a nerve impulse to cross a chemical synapse
Myelin Fatty material that covers and insulates the axons of some neurons
Neurilemma Thin sheath that covers certain peripheral axons
Receptor Specialized cell or ending of a sensory neuron that can be excited by a stimulus
Afferent neuron Carrying toward a given point, such as a sensory neuron that carries nerve impulses toward the CNS
Efferent neuron Carrying away from a given point, such as a motor neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the CNS
White matter Nervous tissue composed of myelinated fibers
Gray matter Nervous tissue composed of unmyelinated fibers and cell bodies
Nerve Bundle of neuron fibers outside the CNS
Tract Bundle of neuron fibers within the CNS
Neuroglia Supporting and protective cells of the nervous system; glial cells
