The Spinal Cord and Spinal Nerves
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Neuron | Conducting cell of the nervous system |
| Dendrites | Neuron fiber that conducts impulses toward the cell body |
| Axon | Fiber of a neuron that conducts impulses away from the cell body |
| Synapse | Junction between two neurons or between a neuron and an effector |
| Neurotransmitter | Chemical released from the ending of an axon that enables a nerve impulse to cross a chemical synapse |
| Myelin | Fatty material that covers and insulates the axons of some neurons |
| Neurilemma | Thin sheath that covers certain peripheral axons |
| Receptor | Specialized cell or ending of a sensory neuron that can be excited by a stimulus |
| Afferent neuron | Carrying toward a given point, such as a sensory neuron that carries nerve impulses toward the CNS |
| Efferent neuron | Carrying away from a given point, such as a motor neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the CNS |
| White matter | Nervous tissue composed of myelinated fibers |
| Gray matter | Nervous tissue composed of unmyelinated fibers and cell bodies |
| Nerve | Bundle of neuron fibers outside the CNS |
| Tract | Bundle of neuron fibers within the CNS |
| Neuroglia | Supporting and protective cells of the nervous system; glial cells |
