The Cranial Nerves and Their Functions

| 1. Olfactory | Smell |
| 2. Optic | Vision |
| 3. Oculomotor | most eye movements, constricts pupil |
| 4. Trochlear | lateral eye movement |
| 5. Trigeminal (clench teeth) | General sense face and head, chewing |
| 6. Abducens | abducts eye |
| 7. Facial | Controls muscles of facial expression, tears; salivation |
| 8. Vestibulocochlear (acoustic) | Hearing and balance |
| 9. Glossopharyngeal | General sense posterior tongue & pharynx, swallowing, taste |
| 10. Vagus | Digestion, also carries motor impulses to the larynx and pharynx |
| 11. Accessory (spinal) | Controls muscles in the neck and larynx (sternocleidomastoid and trapezius) |
| 12. Hypoglossal | Tongue movement |
