Synovial Joint
Parts of a synovial joint
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Joint capsule | connective tissue that encloses each joint and is continuous with the periosteum of the bones. |
Articular cartilage | a smooth layer of hyaline cartilage that protects the bone surfaces. |
Synovial membrane | connective tissue that lines the inner surface of capsules of synovial joints. |
Synovial fluid | Thick, colorless fluid that is secreted by the membrane that lines the joint cavity. |
Bursa | small sacs that are filled with synovial fluid that lie in areas subject to stress and help to ease movement over and around the joints. |
Meniscus | a C shaped pad of cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber. |
