| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Superior | Towards the head or top. |
| Inferior | Away from the head or below |
| Anterior | Towards the front or in front of. |
| Posterior | Towards the back or in back. |
| Distal | Away from point of attachment. Only used with landmarks in hand and leg |
| Proximal | Closer to point of attachment. Only used with landmarks in hand and leg. |
| Superficial | Outermost or towards the outside . Used when there are layers. |
| Deep | innermost or towards the inside. Used when there are layers. |
| Medial | Towards the middle or near the mid line. |
| Lateral | Away from the middle or on either side of midline |
| Anatomical Position | Standing , facing forward, with hands to the side and palms open, facing forward. Toes pointing forward. |
| Atoms | smallest part of matter that has unique properties. |
| Molecule | One or more atoms come together to form a molecule |
| Organelle | One or more macromolecule come together to form organlle. |
| Cell | Simplest unit of life made up of one or more organelle. |
| Tissue | One or more cells come together to perform a common function forms a tissue. |
| Organs | One or more tissues come together to perform a common function forms an organ |
| Organ system | Made up of many organs to perform a complex function. |
