What is the U.S. Constitution? a written plan of government
What is the Preamble to the Constitution? an introduction to the constitution?
Why was the Constitution written? to "keep the people free" by giving the citizens rights and freedoms; explains how our government works
Why are citizens supposed to pay taxes? so the government can use the money to pay for things the citizens need like police and fire departments, roads, bridges, libraries, public schools, etc.
Describe the Bill of Rights. The first 10 amendments to the U.S Constitution which outline the basic freedoms all citizens have
What does it mean for the U.S. to be a "representative democracy"? all citizens have an equal say in decisions that affect their lives; the citizens elect their leaders
What is the purpose of a "checks and balances" system within the three branches of government? To keep one branch from having too much power over another
What do the local, state, and federal governments all have in common? They all make laws, keep people safe, and provide services
In the Preamble, the phrase, "provide for the common defense" means _________________________. that the protection of the United States, its citizens, and property, is the responsibility of the federal government (Ex. United States Military Forces)
