Orientation Of The Body
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Median Plane | Divides the head and torso into right and left halves |
| Sagittal Plane | Divides the body, or its parts, into left and right. NOT HALVES! |
| Sagittal Plane | Parallel to the median plane |
| Coronal/ Frontal Plane | Divides the body, or its parts, into front and back halves, or parts |
| Transverse/ Cross Plane | Divides the body into upper and lower halves, or parts |
| Anatomical Position | Body standing erect, limbs extended, palms of the the hands forward, thumbs directed outward |
| Cranial/ Superior | Closer to the top of the head (excludes limbs) |
| Anterior | A structure being more in front than another |
| Ventral | The abdominal side |
| Ventral | Synonymous to anterior |
| Rostral | Beak-like structure in front of head or brain that projects forward |
| Posterior/ Dorsal | A structure being more in the back than another structure |
| Dorsal | Synonymous to posterior, except in quadrupeds |
| Medial | A structure closer to the median plane than another structure |
| Lateral | A structure farther away from the median plane than another structure |
| Proximal | Structure being closer to the median plane |
