Directional Root Words

Anterior (towards) Front of the body
Ventral (towards) Front of the body
Posterior (towards) Back of the body
Dorsal (towards) Back of the body
Superior Upper, higher than, above
Cranial Upper, higher than, above
Caudal Lower
Inferior Lower, below
Lateral At the side or toward the side of the body. Away from the middle
Medial The middle, or going towards the center of the body
Proximal Nearest to the torso, or to the joint. Used to describe limbs
Distal Farthest from the torso, or the joint
Superficial Closest to the body's surface (skin)
Deep Distant, or away from the body's surface
