| nonpartisan | an election where candidates are not officially affiliated with a political party |
| separation of powers | the constitutional principle that limit the powers vested in one person or branch of government |
| checks and balances | a political system that allows one branch of government to veto or amend the acts of another to prevent one branch from having to much power |
| veto | the power held by the executive branch to reject a law: veto can be overturned |
| right | government protected rights found in the u.s. bill of rights and the GA bill if rights |
| responsibilities | duties that all citizens have:some are mandatory others are voluntary |
| primary election | A primary election is an election used either to narrow the field of candidates for a given elective |
| general election | A general election is an election in which all or most members of a given political body are chosen. |
| special election | An election scheduled at other than the usual date for a specific purpose, often to fill an office that has become vacant before the incumbent has completed the term |
