| Civics | The study of the rights and duties of citizenship |
| Legislative Branch | The lawmaking branch of government |
| Executive Branch | The branch of government that carries out laws |
| Judicial Branch | The branch of government that interprets laws |
| Civil Liberty | Freedom from arbitrary governmental interference (as with the right of free speech) specifically by denial of governmental power and in the U.S. especially as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights |
| Petition | A formal written request made to an official person or organized body (such as a court) |
| Civil Right | The rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. |
| Impeach | To call into question the integrity or validity of (a practice). |
| Checks and Balances | Each branch of government holds some control over the other two branches |
| Bureaucracy | Organization of government administrators to carry out legislation |
| Bill | A proposed law |
| The Cabinet | A body of advisers to the president, composed of the heads of the executive departments of the government. |
| Popular Sovereignty | People are the source of government power |
| Unitary System | Gives all key powers to the national or central government |
| Federal System | Divides powers of government between the national government and state or regional governments |
