Judicial Branch

Jurisdiction the authority to hear and decide a case
exclusive jurisdiction the sole right to hear a case

defendant a person whom the complaint is filed against
original jurisdiction The court that first hears a case
appellate jurisdiction any court that hears a case at a higher level
judicial restraint a judge should interpret the Constitution as it was written
judicial activism a judge that interprets the Constitution that is adapted to modern times
precedents previous court rulings on a given legal question
Senatorial courtesy is a tradition that a Senator from the same state as the nominee and the same political party as the president can block a nomination for virtually any reason
grand jury a panel of 16 to 23 citizens that hear evidence of a crime and recommend whether the evidence is sufficient to file criminal charges
magistrate judges are appointed for 8 years and oversee parts of criminal trials, civil cases, and some misdemeanor cases
