Furosemide

Diuretics. Trade name: lasix

Side effects Hyperuricemia ( excessive uric acid in the blood), hypokalemia (really low potassium level) Muscle cramps, itching or rash, weakness, vertigo, diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, anaphylaxis
Mechanism of action Loop diuretic; inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions at proximal and distal renal tubules and loop of Henle; by interfering with chloride-binding cotransport system, causes increases in water, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and chloride
Absorption Peak effect" < 15min (iv), 1-2 hour (PO)
Dose 20-40mg: Edema (IV/IM), Hypermagnesemia (IV, PRN) 20-80mg: hypertension (PO), Edema (PO/once) 40-80mg: hyperkalemia
