Judicial Power Interprets Laws
Checks and Balances Each branch has a little power over the other
Legislative Branch Consists of the Congress and the Senate
Bicameral Two houses in the Legislature
Executive Branch President, Vice-President, Cabinet, Executive agencies
Political Parties A group of people who raise money and elect candidates to win elections
Republicans - Grand Old Party (GOP) Conservatives, High class, professional occupations, Favor state governments
Democrats Liberals, Middle class, manual occupations, Favor strong central governments
Third Parties Any political party other than the two major ones, Republican and Democrat
Primary Elections This determines who will represent their party as the presidential candidate
Political Action Committees (PACs) Political groups organized to ensure candidates that back the issues most important to the PACs get elected
Interest groups Private groups of people or companies who join together to persuade the government to act on their point of view
Lobbyist A member of an interest group
Suffrage The right to vote
popular vote The citizen’s vote
Electoral vote A States Two Senators plus all of their US Representatives
Voter’s Apathy Not voting because you think your vote will not matter
270 Number of electoral votes required to win the Presidency.
HEAD OF STATE Represents nation in a ceremonial role
CHIEF LEGISLATOR Congress expects the executive branch to propose legislation
ECONOMIC PLANNER Federal Government must promote high employment, production and purchasing power
CHIEF EXECUTIVE Ensures the laws of congress are carried out
PARTY LEADER Presidents own political party expects him to be their leader
CHIEF DIPLOMAT Directs foreign policy for US with others
COMMANDER IN CHIEF Can back up foreign policy with military
