| INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY | All the nations around the world which have different forms of government, values, priorities, and cultures. |
| FOREIGN POLICY | How our country deals with other countries or groups outside our country. |
| US FOREIGN POLICY GOALS | National Security Free and Open Trade World Peace Concern for Humanity Spread Democracy |
| NATIONAL SECURITY | The principle goal of US Foreign Policy is to preserve the security of our nation against invasion/attack. |
| DIPLOMACY | The process in which nation’s leaders meet to negotiate peaceful solutions to their differences |
| ARMS CONTROL | Placing limits on the number of weapons produced by a country. |
| FREE OPEN TRADE | Goods can be imported and exported with no taxes or restrictions. |
| NAFTA | North American Free Trade Agreement. Increased buying and selling in Canada, US, and Mexico. |
| WORLD PEACE | Avoiding global conflicts, and preventing conflict in other countries |
| UNITED NATIONS | Global organization that promotes world peace and cooperation |
| CONCERN FOR HUMANITY | Providing relief and comfort to other countries in the form of food, medical supplies, manpower, and technical support after a catastrophe. |

| SPREAD DEMOCRACY | Enabling other countries to create a democratic political system of government |

| ALLIANCES AND PACTS | Agreements between countries to promote cooperation |
| MILITARY ALLIANCES | Agreements where countries agree to support one another in case of an attack |
| NATO | An attack against one country in NATO is the same as attack against all countries in NATO |
| ECONOMIC ALLIANCES | Agreements between countries to trade imports and exports |
| NAFTA | Established free trade between United State, Canada, and Mexico. Lowered international trade barriers Increased buying and selling in US, Canada, and Mexico |
| FREE TRADE | International trade without restrictions or barriers |
| TARIFF | Taxes placed on goods imported or exported. Countries can control the amount they trade by raising or lowering tariffs |

| DEVELOPING COUNTRIES | Poorer countries that depend on help and foreign aid |
| WORLD BANK | A global organization to help the economic conditions in developing countries |

| EMBARGO | Refusing to trade with another country |
| MILITARY FORCE | Engaging with another country using our military |
