| Terms of Office | Washington set a tradition of 2 terms of four years but it is not addressed in the Constitution until the 22nd Amendment was added. (FDR) |
| Appointment powers | president appoints Supreme Court Justices and federal judges, ambassadors, members of the cabinet, and top military advisers. |
| Executive orders | This is a formal rule or regulation instructing executive branch officials how to carry out their jobs. These have the force of law. |

| Diplomatic Powers | As foreign policy leader, the president represents the United States in its interactions with foreign governments. |

| Military Powers | The President is responsible for ensuring the defense and security of the nation and its interests around the world |
| Legislative Powers | As role of agenda setter the president has a great influence in what Congress works on with. Through the State of the Union Address the President proposes legislation. |
