Constitutional Convention terms

| Rule of Law | principle that the law applies to everyone, even those who govern |
| 3/5s Copromise | agreement providing that enslaved persons would count as three-fifths of other persons in determining representation in Congress |
| House of Burgesses | first form of government in the American colonies; located in Virginia |
| Mayflower Compact | an agreement reached by the Pilgrims before they landed at Plymouth Rock on how they would rule themselves |
| Senate | one house of the bicameral legislative branch in the U.S.; based off equal representation |
| House of Representatives | one house of the bicameral legislative branch in the U.S.; based off of state’s population |
| separation of powers | the split of authority among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches |
| Bill of Rights | first ten amendments of the U.S. Constitution |
| Federalist | supporter of the Constitution |
| Anti-Federalist | those who opposed ratification of the Constitution |
| Constitution | a detailed written plan for government |
| New Jersey Plan | a plan proposed that allowed each state to be equally represented |
| Virginia Plan | a plan proposed that allowed each state to be represented based off their population |
| The Great Compromise | an agreement taking parts of the New Jersey Plan and the Virginia Plan to help set up the structure of our legislative branch |
