Genetics vocabulary words

TermDefinition
Genetics The study of heredity
Gregor Mendel Father of Genetics
Karyotype A picture of chromosomes that are grouped in pairs.
Dominant The gene or allele that wins over other allele, such as T (capital T)
Recessive The allele or gene that appears less often because the dominant allele makes it hide, such as t.
Allele Another word for gene
Homozygous Having two of the SAME alleles for a trait (like TT or tt)
Heterozygous Having two DIFFERENT alleles for a trait (Tt)
Genotype The genetic make up or type such as Tt or TT
Phenotype The physical characteristics or traits, such as tall or short.
