IL Constitution

This is a study stack for the Illinois Constitution Test.

QuestionAnswer
Identify the three branches of IL Government, the responsibility of each branch, and the head of each branch. The Legislative Branch makes laws and is lead by the general assembly. The Executive Branch enforces laws and is lead by the governor. The Judicial Branch interprets laws and is lead by the Supreme Court.
What is federalism? Federalism is a system of government where power is divided between the national government and state governments. (state and federal government both get power)
How do bills become laws for state government? (two options) Option 1: initiatives, and referendums Option 2: same as U.S. Congress
Identify 3 roles of the Governor 1. Chief executive of the state 2. Commander in chief of state militia 3. Appoints department heads, judges, and people to fill important state jobs
Besides the Governor, what are 5 other positions in the Executive Branch? Lt. Gov, Attorney General, Sec. of State, Comptroller, Treasurer

What are the ways that local government is divided? Counties, municipalities, special districts, and school districts
What are the types ways to run local government? 1. Mayor-Council Plan 2. Council -Manager Plan 3. Commission Plan
How does the Mayor-Council Plan work? Mayor-Council Plan: The mayor is the leader. Each member of the council might represent part of the city. The mayor is either weak and is advised by the council. Or, the mayor is strong makes the decisions.
How does the Council-Manager Plan work? Council -Manager Plan: In this plan government is like a business. The manager is hired by the council. The manager takes care of the city business.
How does the Commission plan work? Commission Plan: Each commissioner runs one of the departments for the city. There is no one leader. There is no council.
What is an initiative? People propose laws to lawmakers in the form of a petition.
What is a civil trial? Type of trial that settles a dispute between two parties.
What is a felony? A serious crime that is punishable by time in prison.
What is a misdemeanor? A less serious crime punishable by probation, fines, or jail time.
What is a referendum? Lawmakers propose laws to people. People vote to accept or reject it.
What is a criminal trial? Type of Trial used when someone breaks the law.
What are the order of the state courts? (highest to lowest) state supreme, appellate courts, trial courts, municipal courts/juvenile courts, justices of the peace/magistrates court
