Nephron Parts
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Glomerulus | A tight ball of capillaries that contains all of the "dirty" blood to be filtered. |
| Glomerular capsule/Bowman's capsule | The end of the renal tubules that forms a cup shaped structure that surrounds the glomerulus. |
| Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) | The first part of the renal tubule that is composed of cuboidal epithelia cells for reabsorption. The cells found in the PCT are ciliated to increase absorption. |
| Loop of Henle | The U-shaped loop of the renal tubule. Composed of a descending and ascending portion. |
| Distal convoluted tubule (DCT) | The far end of the renal tubules that is formed of cuboidal epithelial cells. These contain a high number of mitochondria to aid in the active transport of molecules from the blood to the renal tubules. |
| Collecting Ducts | The final part of the nephron that carries the processed waste to renal pelvis of the kidney. |
