| due process | Fair treatment in the judicial system |
| individual rights | Basic liberties and rights of all citizens are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. |
| rule of law | Laws that apply to everyone. No one is above the law. |
| checks and balances | A system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches in order to prevent abuse of power |
| independent judiciary | A system of judges and courts that is separate from other branches of government. |
| federalism | A system in which power is divided between the national and state governments |
| popular sovereignty | A belief that ultimate power resides in the people. |
| republican government | The Federal Government has an obligation to guarantee the States have this (aka representative democracy). |
| legislative branch | Branch of government that makes the nation's laws. |
| executive branch | Branch of government that enforces the laws. |
| judicial branch | Power of the courts to review acts of other branches of government and the states. |
| preamble | A statement in a constitution that sets forth the goals and purposes of government. |
| articles | Seven sections that set up the federal government; they describe how the U.S. government is going to work. |
| amendments | Official changes, corrections, or additions to the Constitution |
| enumerated powers | those powers of the national government that are specifically listed in the U.S. Constitution |
| implied powers | those powers of the national government, and particularly of Congress, that are not specifically listed in the Constitution, but claim as part of its governing responsibility |
