Vocabulary dealing with Congress

TermDefinition
Bicameral legislature a legislature consisting of two parts, or houses
Terms time the elected official will serve
Recess break in a session
Constituents a person from a legislator's district
Incumbent a politician who has already been elected to office
Reapportionment Reassigning seats in the house
Gerrymandering an oddly shaped election district designed to increase the voting strength of a particular group
Caucus a meeting of political party members to conduct party business
Calendar means of keeping track of Congressional business
Filibuster a tactic for defeating a bill in the Senate by talking until the bill's sponsor withdraws
Cloture a procedure used in the Senate to limit debate on a bill
Adjourn Bring the session to a close
