Comma Rules
Basic Rules to know for commas
| Term | Definition |

| Rule 1 | use a comma to separate items in a series |
| Rule 2 | use a comma along with a coordinating conjunction to combine 2 simple sentenced (also called independent clauses) into a single compound sentence. |
| Rule 3 | use a comma to follow introductory words, expressions, phrases, or clauses |
| Rule 4 | use a comma surrounding a word, phrase, or clause when the word of group of words interrupts the main idea. |
| Rule 5 | use a comma around nouns in direct address. (A noun in direct address in the name or title used in speaking to someone.) |
| Rule 6 | use commas in numbers of one thousand or larger. |
| Rule 7 | use a comma to set off exact words spoken in dialogue |
| Rule 8 | use a comma wherever it is necessary to prevent a misunderstanding. |
