Foreign and domestic matters in the US

TermDefinition
Domestic Policy Plans or courses of actions that are directed inward, towards the nation who set them in place to help better the economy, environment, and the peoples well being.
LBJ's "War on Crime" A policy, making crime control a federal priority and ushered in a new era of law enforcement
Gun Control The containment of firearms in the hands of civilians and restricted access in law enforcement
Federal Spending on Crime Initiatives Money going towards law enforcement including new, non lethal weapons and prisons
Harsher Punishment An increase in the consequences of a crime
Three Strikes Law An increase in punishment for a convicted personnel who has committed two prior serious or violent crimes
"War on Drugs" A policy made to try and prohibit drugs
Brown v. Board Supreme Court case held in 1954 that desegregated schools on a federal level
State Government's Role Their role is to create state legislation that doesn't conflict with the constitution and approve the budget taxes for the state they are governing over
Elementary and Secondary Education Act (1965) A law that enacts a commitment to provide an equal opportunity in education to all students whether they be disabled, have learning disabilities, are in poverty, and those who can't speak English
Department of Education A branch of government that has to do with the funding, creation of schools and other educational related jobs
School Vouchers Government funding to a student that can be used to pay tuition towards a school that is not already free
No Child Left Behind A law that provided federal education programs to help the disabled, those with a learning disability and those who can not speak English
Renewable Resources A source of energy, or resource in general, that can be used again and again because it's replaced naturally
Global Warming The rise in average temperature around the globe caused by an increase in carbon dioxide and the depletion of the ozone layer
Superfund A fund to clean up toxic waste sites, created by taxing chemical products
Environmental Protection Agency The nations largest federal regulatory agency. Deals with land use, air and water quality, and wilderness and wildlife preservation
Environmental Impact Statement A detailing of a proposed policy's environmental effects
Clean Air Act (1970) Charges the EPA with protecting and improving the quality of the nations air
Water Pollution Control Act (1972) A law intended to clean up the nations rivers and lakes
Endangered Species Act (1973) Requires the federal government to protect all species listed as endangered
Medicare Health care insurance for the elderly that helps with hospitalization insurance and short-term nursing
Medicaid Program designed to provide health care for those in poverty
Veterans Administration An organization on the federal level that provides patient care, veterans' benefits , and other services to veterans of the US military and their families
Food and Drug Administration An organization charged with the regulation of food and health-related products
Clinton's Health Care Proposals A proposed universal health care reform that set up enforced health care through employers with competitive, but closely regualted, health maintenance organizations
Obama-care A law that makes quality health care more widely available to the citizens and also set up a plan to have all Americans under health care by 2014
New Deal A series of programs focused to help the people directly by government spending into the economy to help the nation out of the great depression
Social Security Act Created medicare, or the support of the elderly through the taxation of those who are working
