| Genetics | a branch of biology that studies heredity |
| Heredity | passing on of characteristics from parents to offspring |
| Genes | The characteristics in cells that determine what will be passed from parents to children |
| Inherit | to receive from a parent or ancestor |
| Trait | a characteristic that is inherited and can either be recessive or dominant |
| Dominant | observed traits of an organism that mask that recessive trait |
| Recessive | trait of an organism that can be masked by the dominant form of the trait |
| Offspring | the first generation of descendants produced by an animal or plant |
| Learned Behavior | A learned behavior is one that an organism develops as a result of experience |
| Instinct | can be performed without any prior experience or training |
| Mutation | any random change in a organism's DNA |
| Carcinogens | cancer causing agents that can cause uncontrollable cell growth |
| homozygous dominant | an organism with two dominant alleles for a trait. (two upper case letters) |
| homozygous recessive | an organism with two recessive alleles for a trait, (two lower case letters) |
| heterozygous | an organism with a dominant allele and a recessive allele for a trait ( an uppercase letter and a lower case letter) |
| purebred | an organism that has two alleles that are the same, can be two dominant or two recessive |
| hybrid | an organism that has two different alleles for a trait, same as a heterozygous trait. |
