Body planes
| Term | Definition |

| Superior(cephalad) | Above This term refers to placement of a structure along the long axis of the body. |
| Inferior(caudal) | Below This term refers to placement of a structure along the long axis of the body. |
| Anterior | Front |
| Medial | Toward the midline |
| Cephalad (cranial) | toward the head |
| caudal | toward the tail |
| dorsal | backside |
| ventral | bellyside |
| proximal | nearer the trunk or point of reference |
| distal | farther from the trunk or point of reference |
| lateral | away from the midline or medial plane |
| posterior | back:posterior are those toward the backside |
| superficial (external) | toward or at the body surface |
| deep (internal) | away from the surface |
| sagittal plane | divides the body into left and right parts |
| median/mid sagittal plane | a plane that divides the body into equal parts, right down the middle |
| parasagittal plane | all other sagittal planes that do not evenly divide the body |
| frontal/coronal plane | divides the body into anterior and posterior parts |
| transverse plane | runs horizontally, dividing the body into superior and inferior parts; crates cross section. |
| spinal | near the spine and spinal cord |
| abdominal | around the abdomen |
| pelvic | around the pelvis |
| thoracic | around the chest |
