Marbury vs. Madison Established power of "judicial review" meaning they only rule a law unconstitutional
Plessy vs. Ferguson "Separate but equal"
Brown vs. Board of Education Overturned plessy vs. Ferguson and ruled segregation unlawful
Miranda vs. Arizona Led to cops havin to read people their rights when arrested
Roe vs. Wade Abortions should be legalized
Blush vs. Gore Case ultimately decided the 2000 Presidential election when the judges voted 5-4 to stop the Florida re-count
Strict Constructionalist Believes what the constitution says it exactly what it means, follow strictly with it's wording
Original Intent Attempt to imagine what the founders originally meant when they wrote the constitution
Living Constitution A loose interpretation that is flexible to our changing world
Judicial Review The power of the supreme court to rule a law unconstitutional
Jurisdiction Area that a court has power over
Precedent Something that has already happened SC uses this to decide cases
Litigant Person involved in a lawsuit
Grand Jury Decides if there is enough evidence to have a trial
Indictment Means a grand jury says there should be a trail
Petit Jury Declares guilty or not guilty
US Marshalls Are employed by the Fed. courts to make arrests, secure jurors, and keep order in the court room
Magistrate A judge with the main job of issuing arrest warrents
District Courts hearing the cases about robbery, murder, etc
Appeals courts 1. uphold original decision 2. reverse the decision 3. sen case back for a new trail
