pulmonary circuit capillaries going to the lugs where blood becomes oxygenated; the heart and lungs
systemic circuit oxygen leaves the blood and CO2 enters the blood from the muscles; the limbs of the body
arteries always carry blood away from the heart; high blood pressure; thicker walls; never have valves
veins carry blood toward the heart; low blood pressure; thinner walls; may have valves
elastic (large) arteries aorta, pulmonary trunk and their close branches
muscular (medium) arteries distribute blood to head, limbs and organs
arterioles distribute blood withing organs and tissues
capillaries primary site for exchange of gases, nutrients, ions, wastes, hormones, cells, etc; smallest of blood vessels
venules gather blood from capillaries; also some exchange of same materials as capillaries
small veins gather blood from tissues
medium veins gather blood from head, limbs and organs
large veins return blood to heart
endothelium entire circulatory system is lined by this simple squamous epithelium
