Medical Terminology

| Amenorrhea | An abnormal absence of menstrual periods for 3 or more months |
| Andropause | Decrease of the male hormone testosterone |
| Apgar Score | A scale of 1-10 to evaluate a newborn infants physical status at 1 and 5 minutes afterbirth |
| Azoospermia | The absence of sperm in the semen |
| Cervical Dysplasia | Growth of abnormal cells in the cervix |
| Chlamydia | Most common, high contagious and requires early treatment with antibiotics |
| Eclampsia | A more serious from of pre-eclamps, characterized by convulsions and sometimes coma |
| Fibrocystic Breast Disease | The presence of single or multiple benign cysts in the breast |
| Galactorrhea | The production of breast milk in a women who is not breastfeeding |
| Gonorrhea | A highly contagious condition caused by the bacterium neisseria gonorrhoeae |
| Hysterectomy | Surgical removal of the uterus |
| Mastalgia | Pain in the breast |
| Neonate | The baby first 4 weeks after being born |
| Nulligravida | A woman who has never been pregnant |
| Nullipara | A woman who has never borne a viable child |
| Obstetrician | A physician who specializes in providing medical care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and immediate after |
| Oligomenorrhea | Infrequent or very high menstruation in a women with previously normal periods |
| Oophorectomy | Surgical procedure to remove one or both of your ovaries |
| Orchidectomy | Surgical removal of one or both testicles |
| Orchiopexy | Endoscopic surgery to move an undescended testicle into its normal position i the scrotum |
| Placenta Previa | Abnormal implantation of the placenta in the lower portion of the uterus |
| Preeclampsia | Complication of pregnancy characterized by hypertension, edema, and proteinuria |
| Priapism | Painful erection that lasts 4 hours or more and can be caused by medication, diseases, or trauma |
| Primigravida | A women during her first pregnancy |
| Primipara | A women who has borne on viable child |
| Pruritus Vulvae | Severe itching of the external female genitalia |
| Salpingo-oophorectomy | The surgical removal of a fallopian tube and ovary |
| Syphilis | An STD caused by the bacterium treponema palladium; many symptoms |
| Varicocele | Knot of widening varicose veins in one side of the scrotum |
| Circumcision | Surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis |
| Salpingitis | Inflammation of a fallopian tube |
| Premature Menopause | Ovaries cease function before age 40 years due to disease, hormonal disorder, or surgical removal |
| Total | The uterus and cervix are removed and can be done through the vagina or laparoscopically |
| Lochia | Postpartum vaginal discharge that typically continues for 4 to 6 weeks after childbirth |
| Abruptio Placentae | Disorder in which the placenta separates from the uterine wall before the birth of the fetus |
| Gynecologist | Physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and specializes in diagnosing and treating the female reproductive system |
