EMTALA Emergency Medical Treatment and Activity Labor Act Rights of ED pts, transfer and acceptance P&P delineated to ensure facility compliance (cannot turn away emergency care due to inability to pay, etc)
Equal Employment Opportunity Act (1972) Prohibits discrimination in workplace based on gender, race, religion, national origin
EPA Equal Pay Act (1963) Requires equal pay for men/women performing substantially same work
FACTA Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (2003) Contains provisions/requirements to reduce ID theft
FLSA Fair Labor Standards Act (1938) Sets minimum wage and overtime pay regulations
FMLA Family and Medical Leave Act (1993) Allows employees up to 12 wks off work to care for self/family w/assurance of equivalent position upon RTW
FOIA Freedom of Information Act Applies only to federal agencies; can seek access to info w/o authorization of person to whom the info applies
HITECH - Health Info Tech for Economic & Clinical Health Act (part of ARRA - 2009) Intended to increase momentum of EHR implementation by 2014
HIPAA Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (1996) Provides continuity of health coverage, control of fraud and abuse in hc, reduce hc costs, guarantee security/privacy of health info
Health Research Extension Act (1985) Established guidelines for proper care of animals used in biomedical and behavioral research
Hill-Burton Act (aka Hospital Survey & Construction Act) [1946] Authorized grants for states to construct new hospitals; later, to modernize old hospitals
Labor-Management Relations Act aka Taft-Hartley Act (1947) imposed certain restrictions on unions while upholding their right to organize and bargain effectively
Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (Landrum-Griffin Act) (1959) Ensure union members' interests are properly represented by union leadership; included creation of a bill of rights for union members
OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Act (1970) Established comprehensive safety and health guidelines for employers

PACE - Programs of All-Inclusive Care for Elderly (legislated by BBA 1997) provides alternative to insitutional care for individuals 55+ who require nursing home level of care
Social Security Act (1935/1965 Amended) 1935 established SS program, unemployment compensation, support for mothers&children; 1965 created Medicare/Medicaid programs
TEFRA Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act (1982) Modified Medicare retrospective reimbursement system for IP stay; required DRG groups and acute-care PPS
Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (1994) Prohibits discrimination because of service in military/uniformed services
WARN Workers' Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act Employers must give 60-day notice in advance of covered plant closings and covered mass layoffs
