Chapter 7 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Coefficient The number in front of a variable.
Constant The term without a variable.
Distributive Property To multiply a sum or difference by a number, Multiply each term inside the ( ) by the number outside the ( ).
Equivalent expressions Expressions that have the same value.
Factor To write a number as a product of its factors (2)(2)(n)
Factored form A monomial expression as a product of prime numbers and variables where no variable has an exponent greater than one. 4(2n +1)
Like Terms Terms that contain the same variables or constant 2n and 5n
Linear Expression An algebraic expression in which the variable is raised to the first power. (2n + 6) + (5n +1)
Simplest Form An algebraic expression in simplest form has no like terms and no ( ). 2n + 3y +5
Simplifying the expression To use distribution to combine like terms
Term When addition or subtraction signs separate an algebraic expression into parts, each part is a term Example: 3 terms (2n + 4y +6)
