| Limited Government | Government is not all powerful; it can be restricted in what it does |
| Magna Carta | Established limitations on the power of the English King |
| Charter | A written grant of authority from the king |
| Bicameral | Legislature having two houses |
| Popular Sovereignty | The people rule |
| First Continental Congress | Formed after Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts |
| Second Continental Congress | Met after the "shot heard round the world". Approved the Declaration of Independence and became the United State's 1st government |
| Articles of Confederation | The first government for the U.S. Written by the Second Continental Congress after the Declaration of Independence. |
| Ratification | Formal Approval |
| Virginia Plan | Plan for the new system of government, largely written by James Madison |
| New Jersey Plan | Small state plan for the new government |
| Connecticut Compromise | Also called the Great Compromise. Settled the disagreement between the large and small states |
| Three-fifths Compromise | Slaves would be counted as three-fifths of a person |
| Commerce and Slave Trade Compromise | No taxes on exports and slave trade could continue for 20 years |
| Federalists | Favored ratification of the constitution |
| Anti-Federalists | Were against ratification of the constitution |
| Bill of Rights | First 10 amendments to the constitution promised to get big states to ratify the constitution |
| The Federalists Paper | Essays written in support of the constitution by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay |
