Government How societies make and enforce public policy
Public Policy Everything a government decides to do
Constitution Sets out basic principals, structure and processes of government
Dictatorship A type of government in which the leader or leaders is not held responsible to the people.
Democracy A type of government in which the people have the power and give officials the power to govern
State A body of people living in a defined territory, organized politically, with the power to make their own laws without the consent of anyone else
Sovereign The ability to make decisions without the consent of anyone else.
Republic Government in which people elect representatives to rule for them.
Autocracy Rule by one person
Oligarchy Rule by a small group
Totalitarian Complete governmental control
Unitary Government All power is centrally located
Federal Government Power is shared between central and regional governments
Confederate Government Alliance of independent states
Presidential Government Separation of power between different branches of government
Parliamentary Government Power is held by legislature. Prime Minister and Cabinet are members of legislature.
Compromise Finding common ground for agreement
Free Enterprise System Economic system in which individuals get to make economic choices, sometimes called capitalism.
