| Limited Government | Severe restrictions on what govt. can and can't do in an effort to protect individual rights |
| Self Government | Idea that people are the ultimate source of authority (majority rule) |

| Declaration of Independence | Proclaimed inalienable rights; "break up letter" |

| 4th Amendment | Protects against unlawful search and seizure |
| 5th Amendment | Protects the rights of those accused of a crime |
| 8th Amendment | Protects against excessive bail/fines and no cruel and unusual punishment |
| 9th and 10th | Any powers not granted to national govt. belong to states or people |
| Judicial Review | The power of the court to determine whether something is constitutional |
| Republic | leaders are selected by the people but they are free to make policy as they see fit |
| Jeffersonian Democracy | Championed the govt. working for all and not just the elite |
| Jacksonian Democracy | Pushed for electors to be chosen by popular vote in each state, thus giving common people more power |
| Progressives | Got referendums at state level, direct election of senators, and primary elections to narrow field of candidates |
| Democracy | Provides for majority influence via elections |
| Constitution | Protects minority rights and enforces rule of law |
