Limited Government Severe restrictions on what govt. can and can't do in an effort to protect individual rights
Self Government Idea that people are the ultimate source of authority (majority rule)

Declaration of Independence Proclaimed inalienable rights; "break up letter"
Articles of Confederation First system of govt., each state functioned like it's own country, weak national govt., could not cleat taxes/pay debts
Shay's Rebellion Showed weakness of the government and was led by farmer Daniel Shay, met in Philadelphia
Virginia Plan Favored larger states (2 houses based on population)
New Jersey Plan Favored smaller states (2 houses with equal representation)
Connecticut (Great) Compromise what we have now. House based on population, senate with equal representation
3/5 Compromise South wanted to count slaves as people for representation. North said no. Agreement was to count each black as 3/5 of a person
Federalists Liked the constitution and strong national govt. (Hamilton, Madison, Jay)
The first state to ratify the Constitution was... Delaware
Anti-Federalists Favored stronger state govt
Constitution The fundamental law that defines how a govt. will operate
Grants of Power 17 specific powers given to national govt. Any power not specifically granted to the govt. belong to the states/people
Separation of powers Attempt to prevent any part of govt. from getting too powerful
Checks and balances Another provision to prevent the abuse of power
1st amendment Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
2nd Amendment Right to bear arms
4th Amendment Protects against unlawful search and seizure
5th Amendment Protects the rights of those accused of a crime
8th Amendment Protects against excessive bail/fines and no cruel and unusual punishment
9th and 10th Any powers not granted to national govt. belong to states or people
Judicial Review The power of the court to determine whether something is constitutional
Republic leaders are selected by the people but they are free to make policy as they see fit
Jeffersonian Democracy Championed the govt. working for all and not just the elite
Jacksonian Democracy Pushed for electors to be chosen by popular vote in each state, thus giving common people more power
Progressives Got referendums at state level, direct election of senators, and primary elections to narrow field of candidates
Democracy Provides for majority influence via elections
Constitution Protects minority rights and enforces rule of law
