What is the function of connective tissue? it provides support to the body and its organs
What does connective tissue consist of? cells, ground substance (matrix), and fibers
What is the matrix component of connective tissue? it lies around the cells and facilitates diffusion of oxygen and nutrients between the cells and the vascular system
What are the types of fibers in connective tissue? collagen, elastic, reticular
Describe collagen fibers large fibers with great tensile strength; e.g. tendons and ligaments
Describe elastic fibers thin branching fibers that allows for movement; e.g. aorta and lungs
Describe reticular fibers thin fibers that form a supporting framework for organs; e.g. spleen, liver, and lymph nodes
What are the 4 types of connective tissue in order from hardest to liquid? bone, cartilage, connective tissue proper, blood
What are the 3 types of loose connective tissue? areolar (fascia), adipose, and reticular
