Elections vocabulary

General Elections an election in which the voters
Primary Election an election in which voters of political parties
Polling Place a place where citizens go to vote
popular vote the votes cast in a presidential election ( the people's vote)
electorate eligible voters
Political party an organization of citizens with similar views on issues who work to put their ideas into effect through government actions
nominate to select candidates to run for political office
candidate people who run for political office
campaign an organized effort to persuade voters to vote for a particular issue
two-party system a political system with two strong political parties
Party Platform written statement outlining a political party's view on issues and describing the programs it proposes (what a party stands for)
third parties minor political parties in a two party system
liberal tend to favor proposals for reform and are open to new ideas for progress; tend to be tolerant
concervative tend to preserve the existing views, and ways of life, traditional
Mass Media form of communication that transmit information to large numbers of people
bias on sided point of view
interest groups organization of people with common interests who try to influence government policies and decisions
Lobbyist a person paid to represent an interest group's viewpoint
public opinion total of opinions held concerning a particular issue
Propoganda ideas/methods used to influence people's thinking and behavior
PAC Political Action Committee: part of an interest group that collects contributions from members to fund campaigns
