Who is the leader of local government? The Mayor

The Legislative Branch of government does what? makes laws
What is the legislative branch of local government? City Council or in some communities the County Commission
What is the main job of the City Council? To make laws and rules for a city.
What is the judicial branch of government? The courts.
What is the job of the local courts? The courts decide if laws have been broken. The courts settle disagreements.
What officials work in the courts? judges
What services are provided by local government through taxes? schools, police protection, fire protection, local libraries, roads & road repair, parks
How does someone become a mayor or city council member? The run in an election and are voted for by the citizens. If they get the majority of the votes, then they will serve.
Why do citizens pay taxes? Citizens pay taxes to support the government to help to provide services to everyone in the community.
What are the three kinds of taxes? income tax, property tax, and sales tax
What are some things good citizens do? Good citizens vote and stay informed, communicate with government leaders, pay taxes, obey laws, volunteer in their community, and serve on courts for jury duty.
How do citizens help make decision about taxes? Citizens may vote to raise or lower taxes.
What are the three branches of local government? Executive Branch - Mayor Legislative Branch - City Council Judicial Branch - Courts
