Lobbyist definition - Gratz A lobbyist is a representative of an intrest group who tries to influence government through direct contact with officials.
What tool(s) does a lobbyist use to influence government? -Gratz Lobbyists provide officials with information.
What are the requirements to become a lobbyist? -Gratz Lobbyist must register and identify what interest group they are lobbying for.
Definition of Political Socialization (Becca) process by which individuals learn their political beliefs and attitudes through personal background and experiences (party)
What is the number one influence in political socialization? (becca) Family
What demographic groups normally vote democratic? (becca) Lower income, females, those who live on the coasts or in urban regions.
What demographic groups normally vote republican? (becca) Middle to upper class, males, those who live in suburbs or the middle of the country (midwest)
What is the definition of a political party? (becca) organization that tries to elect its members to public office so its views can become public policy
What is the main goal of a political party? (becca) to be the government
What are the functions of political parties? (becca) to recruit a candidate, name and support them as their candidate, provide a brand name for them, be a watch dog and to operate the government in their image
What are the criticism of political parties? (becca) Try to appeal to too many voters (conflicting beliefs/no unity), more interested in personal success rather than public good, too much bickering between parties
What is the main goal of an interest group? (becca) influence government, usually focus on a particular issue
What are the tools of interest groups; what are the tools of the tools of the interest groups? (becca) PAC: Political Action Committee (provide money) and Lobbyist (provide info)
What are the functions of interest groups? (becca) to bridge the gap between the people and the government and to stimulate interest in public affairs
Criticisms of Interest Groups (becca) Influence exceeds its membership, hard to tell how many people they represent, don't represent all views for the people they say they represent, tactics that undermine political system ($$$), focus on one narrow issue
What is the only successful third party? (becca) Republican Party
What are the roles of third parties? (becca) promote new ideas, put issues on platforms, provide choice and to be a spoiler to one candidate for winning
Why have third parties survived? (becca) They affect the outcome of elections(bush clinton), and their ideas have been adopted (issues with environment)
What is an ideological third party? (becca) (libertarian/green) focus on overall change in society
What is a one issue third party? (becca) (prohibition party, legalization party) focus on one major issue could be social economic or moral
What is a economic or protest third party? (becca) (populous, occupy wall street) usually region based, protest bad economic conditions and fade when they improve
What is a factional or splinter third party? (becca) (reform party, Ross Peroe) split away from one of the major two to failure of popular to gain nomination
What is the difference between a PAC and a Super PAC? (becca) PAC can coordinate with a campaign financially however they have limits on how much. Super PACs have no limits of the amount they can spend however they can not directly coordinate to the campaign
What is the difference between Occupy Wallstreet and Tea Party? (becca) Occupy Wall Street: social group to protest wealth inequality, greed and corruption ($ was produced by PACs and Lobbyists), Tea Party: closer to a political party, believe strict adherence to constitution, lower taxes and reduction of the debt
How do the Democratic and Republican Parties stand on Gun Control and Abortion? (becca) Dem: anti guns, lead to violence. pro choice. Rep: pro guns, freedom of the 2nd amendment, Pro Life.
