| Pathophysiology | Hormonal changes of puberty enlarge the skin's sebaceous glands, increasing their output of an oily substance called sebum. A buildup of sebum mixed with bacteria, dead skin cells, and other debris clogs pores, leading to one or more forms of acne. |
| Diagnosis | Appearance, presence of symptoms, existence of provoking factors. |
| Treatment | Benzoyl peroxide with salicylic acid, alcohol, and sodium thiosulfate. Topical antibiotics: Erythromycin or clindamycin cream. Oral medication: Tetracycline. Severe form: Tretinoin (Retin-A) or isotretinoin (Accutane). |
