Acne Acne vulgaris
Causes/Etiology Hormonal changes, Birth control pills, Poor hygiene.
Symptoms/Presentation Characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts.
Pathophysiology Hormonal changes of puberty enlarge the skin's sebaceous glands, increasing their output of an oily substance called sebum. A buildup of sebum mixed with bacteria, dead skin cells, and other debris clogs pores, leading to one or more forms of acne.
Diagnosis Appearance, presence of symptoms, existence of provoking factors.
Treatment Benzoyl peroxide with salicylic acid, alcohol, and sodium thiosulfate. Topical antibiotics: Erythromycin or clindamycin cream. Oral medication: Tetracycline. Severe form: Tretinoin (Retin-A) or isotretinoin (Accutane).
