TermDefinition
Trustees Lawmakers who vote base on his or her conscience and judgment, not the views of his or her constituents
Partisans Lawmakers who owes their first allegiance to their political party and votes according to the party line
Bills A proposed law presented to a legislative bod for consideration
Floor Consideration The process by which proposed laws are considered and acted upon by the full membership of the House or Senate
Overnight Function Review by legislative committees of he policies and programs of the executive branch
Term Two-year period during which Congress meets
Session Period of time during which, each year, Congress assembles and conducts business
Convene To begin a new session of Congress
Adjourn Suspend, as in a session of Congress
Recess A time when both houses of Congress temporarily suspend business
Special Session An extraordinary session of a legislative body, called to deal with an emergency situation
Apportioned Distribute, as in seats in a legislative body
Reapportioned Redistribute, as in seats in a legislative body
Gerrymandering The drawing of electoral district lines to the advantage of a party of group
Off-Year Elections Congressional elections that occurs between presidential election years
Incumbent The current officeholder
Continuous Body Governing unit who seats are never all up for election at the same time (Senate)
Constituencies The people and interests that an elected official represents
Commerce Power Exclusive power of congress to regulate interstate and foreign trade
Tax A charge levied by government on persons or property to meet public needs
Public Debt All of the money borrowed by the government and not yet repaid, plus the accrued interest on the money
