What is the purpose of a primary election? To weed out candidates, nominate candidate for offices
What is a closed primary Only members of a certain political party can vote Ex: Only republicans can vote in a republican primary
What is an open primary All voters are allowed to participate regardless of political party
what are the first two states to hold primary elections? New Hampshire, Iowa-Caucus
What is front loading? Moving a primary date to the beginning of the presidential nominating season, so that they have more influence in the selection process
What is the purpose of a political party? to join people who have similar points of view about the government together
What is the function of third parties? To offer different , alternative viewpoints than major parties, can take away votes
What are the results of third parties? They often promote ideas that were unpopular. They draw votes from the other major parties, They rarely win
What is planks? Individual parts of a party's platform
What is the platform? a series of statements expressing the party's principles, beliefs, positions on election issues
